Interventional Pulmonology

Expert minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment for lung nodules, airway obstruction, pleural effusions, and complex respiratory conditions, using advanced bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound, and image-guided technology.

About Department

Interventional Pulmonology at PB Health is a highly specialised unit dedicated to minimally invasive procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting the lungs, airways, mediastinum, and pleural cavity. The department brings together experienced interventional pulmonologists, high-definition bronchoscopy systems, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) platforms, and image-guided intervention technology.

Core Interventional Pulmonology Capabilities

1

High-definition flexible and rigid bronchoscopy suites

2

Endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) for tissue sampling and mediastinal lymph node staging

3

Radial EBUS and navigation bronchoscopy for peripheral lung nodule evaluation

4

Therapeutic bronchoscopy for relief of central airway obstruction

5

Pleural procedures, including diagnostic and therapeutic thoracentesis, pleural biopsy, intercostal drain insertion, indwelling pleural catheter placement, and pleurodesis

6

Transbronchial cryobiopsy for histological evaluation in selected interstitial lung disease cases

7

Airway stenting and balloon bronchoplasty for benign and malignant airway stenosis

8

Urgent bronchoscopy and complex airway interventions in the critical care setting

Integrated Procedural Care Model

Our Interventional Pulmonology unit follows a structured, multidisciplinary care pathway. Interventional pulmonologists work alongside thoracic surgeons, medical oncologists, intensivists, radiologists, anaesthetists, and pathologists to ensure cohesive, evidence-based management at every stage.

We deliver comprehensive care from initial consultation and imaging review through advanced intervention, tissue diagnosis, treatment planning, and post-procedural follow-up. Every patient benefits from accelerated diagnostics, reduced procedural risk, and timely clinical decision-making supported by the full breadth of specialist expertise.

Clinical Focus Areas

  • Lung Nodules & Abnormal CT Findings: Evaluation and biopsy of suspicious nodules or masses
  • Suspected Lung Cancer: Tissue diagnosis, staging, and treatment planning support
  • Airway Obstruction: Tumours, stenosis, mucus plugging, foreign body aspiration
  • Pleural Diseases: Pleural effusion, empyema, recurrent fluid build-up, pleural thickening
  • Persistent Lung Collapse: Atelectasis caused by blockage or mucus retention
  • Difficult Respiratory Symptoms: Chronic cough, unexplained wheeze, haemoptysis (coughing blood)
  • Complex Infections: Non-resolving pneumonia, tuberculosis evaluation, fungal lung disease
  • Interstitial Lung Disease: Advanced biopsy support in selected patients
  • Critical Airway Emergencies: Severe narrowing, sudden breathlessness, urgent obstruction management

What To Expect In The Interventional Pulmonology Unit

Your symptoms, prior CT scans, chest X-rays, spirometry results, and relevant investigation reports are reviewed before your appointment to ensure a focused and productive consultation.

Interventional Pulmonology Services & Procedures

Diagnostic Bronchoscopy

Flexible bronchoscopy for the evaluation of persistent cough, haemoptysis, suspected airway lesions, and recurrent infection. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) for microbiological and cytological analysis. Endobronchial and transbronchial biopsy for airway and parenchymal lesions. Bronchoscopic detection and extraction of aspirated foreign bodies.

Advanced Cancer Diagnosis & Staging

EBUS-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) of mediastinal and hilar lymph nodes. Minimally invasive mediastinal staging for non-small cell lung cancer. Radial EBUS and navigation bronchoscopy for peripheral nodule biopsy. Tissue acquisition for molecular profiling, biomarker testing, and genomic analysis.

Therapeutic Airway Procedures

Endobronchial debulking of obstructing tumours using mechanical, laser, or thermal techniques. Balloon bronchoplasty for benign and post-surgical airway stenosis. Silicone and self-expanding metallic stent placement for central airway obstruction. Argon plasma coagulation and electrocautery for selected endobronchial lesions.

Pleural Interventions

Diagnostic and therapeutic thoracentesis (pleural fluid aspiration). Ultrasound-guided intercostal drain insertion. Image-guided pleural biopsy for undiagnosed pleural disease. Indwelling pleural catheter (IPC) placement for recurrent or malignant effusion. Chemical pleurodesis for recurrent malignant pleural effusion.

Advanced Lung Diagnostics

Transbronchial cryobiopsy for histological diagnosis of interstitial lung disease. Bronchoscopic sampling for difficult or culture-negative pulmonary infections. Evaluation of recurrent lobar or segmental atelectasis.

ICU & Emergency Pulmonary Procedures

Urgent bronchoscopy for mucus plugging and lobar collapse in ventilated patients. Bronchoscopic airway clearance and secretion management in the ICU. Evaluation and control of haemoptysis and bleeding airway lesions. Emergency airway assessment and stabilisation support.
