Do's

  • You must arrive with a FULL bladder. A distended bladder acts as an acoustic window to image the pelvic organs. • Drink one litre (Four–Five glasses) of plain water one hour before your appointment. • Avoid carbonated drinks — plain water only. •No fasting is required unless your doctor has combined this with an abdominal scan.
  • Continue all regular medications.
  • Inform the sonographer if you are pregnant. •After the transabdominal scan, the sonographer may advise a transvaginal scan (TVS) for female patients if better detail is needed. (See TVS section for full instructions.)
  • For male patients assessing the prostate: the bladder provides the acoustic window. The examination may include post-void residual volume — you will be asked to urinate and then scanned again.

Don'ts

  • Do not urinate after drinking the water. Try to hold urine until after the examination. •Avoid tight belts and metal buckles in the pelvic area.
