Do's

  • GENERAL INFORMATION • Obstetric ultrasound uses sound waves to evaluate the baby, placenta, amniotic fluid, and uterus. It is safe for both mother and baby. •Different scans are performed at different stages of pregnancy. Instructions vary by trimester. FIRST TRIMESTER SCAN (Up to 13 weeks 6 days)
  • Bladder preparation: A moderately full bladder is helpful — drink 2–3 glasses of water 30–45 minutes before. Do not overfill.
  • Note: A transvaginal scan (TVS) is often required in early pregnancy for better visualisation. Please see the TVS section.
  • Bring your referral document and any prior scan reports.
  • SECOND TRIMESTER SCAN (14–27 weeks)
  • Bladder preparation: A comfortably full bladder is preferred — drink 2 glasses of water 30 minutes before. You do not need to be uncomfortably full.
  • This scan usually takes 30–45 minutes. The duration depends on fetal position.
  • The baby may not co-operate fully — a repeat scan may occasionally be needed to complete the morphology assessment.
  • THIRD TRIMESTER SCAN (28 weeks onwards)
  • Bladder preparation: No special bladder preparation required in the third trimester.
  • Bring previous scan reports for comparison.

Don'ts
