You must arrive with a FULL bladder. A distended bladder acts as an acoustic window to image the pelvic organs. • Drink one litre (Four–Five glasses) of plain water one hour before your appointment. • Avoid carbonated drinks — plain water only. •No fasting is required unless your doctor has combined this with an abdominal scan.
Continue all regular medications.
Inform the sonographer if you are pregnant. •After the transabdominal scan, the sonographer may advise a transvaginal scan (TVS) for female patients if better detail is needed. (See TVS section for full instructions.)
For male patients assessing the prostate: the bladder provides the acoustic window. The examination may include post-void residual volume — you will be asked to urinate and then scanned again.
Do not urinate after drinking the water. Try to hold urine until after the examination. •Avoid tight belts and metal buckles in the pelvic area.
