LDL Cholesterol (Direct)

Cholesterol
This test directly measures LDL cholesterol, often called bad cholesterol, using a direct assay rather than calculating it from other lipid values.
What is this test?
LDL particles deposit cholesterol in the walls of arteries, forming plaque that narrows and stiffens them and eventually causes heart attacks and strokes. LDL is the primary target of cholesterol-lowering treatment. The direct method is more accurate than calculation, particularly when triglycerides are high, when the sample is not fasting, or when LDL is very low, making it especially useful in diabetes, metabolic syndrome and in patients already on statin therapy. Results should always be discussed with your treating doctor, who will interpret them together with your symptoms, medical history and any other tests you have had.
LDL Cholesterol (Direct) is offered as a lab test. Follow preparation instructions if any, and consult your doctor to interpret results.
