Hiv Aids
This is an early HIV detection profile specifically designed for infants and children under two years of age.
What is this test?
In this age group, standard antibody tests are unreliable because antibodies transferred from an HIV-positive mother across the placenta persist in the baby's blood for up to eighteen months and would produce a positive result even in an uninfected child. This profile therefore uses tests that detect the virus itself rather than antibodies, providing an accurate early diagnosis. Early detection is critical because HIV progresses rapidly in infants, and prompt antiretroviral treatment dramatically improves survival and development. Your doctor will explain what your particular result means for you, since laboratory findings are always interpreted alongside your symptoms, examination and other investigations.
HIV-Early Detection Profile -2 For age < 2 yrs is offered as a lab test. Follow preparation instructions if any, and consult your doctor to interpret results.
