Adrenal Gland Antibodies
1
Gastrointestinal Disorder
This blood test detects antibodies that your immune system has mistakenly produced against your own adrenal glands, the small glands above each kidney that make cortisol and aldosterone, hormones essential for handling stress, blood pressure and salt balance.
What is this test?
The presence of these antibodies indicates autoimmune adrenal destruction, the commonest cause of Addison's disease. Symptoms include profound fatigue, weight loss, low blood pressure, dizziness on standing, salt craving, nausea and darkening of the skin. The test is important because Addison's disease can be life-threatening if untreated but is easily managed with hormone replacement, and detection allows screening for other associated autoimmune conditions.
Adrenal Gland Antibodies is offered as a lab test. Follow preparation instructions if any, and consult your doctor to interpret results.
